Honorary Members

Purpose

Honorary Membership is the highest recognition conferred by the Meteorological Society. It is intended to:

  • Recognise individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to meteorology, climatology or the atmospheric sciences in New Zealand; and
  • Advance the principal objective of the Society by encouraging interest in the atmosphere, weather, and climate, particularly as they relate to the New Zealand region, and by fostering the exchange of knowledge and information in meteorology and climatology.

Eligibility and Award Criteria

Honorary Membership recognises individuals who have made an exceptional contribution to meteorology, climatology or the atmospheric sciences. It may be awarded for:

  • Exceptional research and scholarship in meteorology, climatology or the atmospheric sciences,
  • Exceptional leadership and service that have advanced the meteorological, climatological or the atmospheric sciences professions,
  • Exceptional contributions to the practical application of meteorology and climatology, including operational forecasting, climate services, and related activities; and/or
  • Exceptional contributions to the advancement of meteorology, climatology or the atmospheric sciences, including education, outreach, and the promotion of public understanding and awareness.

There is an expectation that recipients will be financial members of the New Zealand Meteorological Society at the time Honorary Membership is conferred. Honorary Members will normally be resident in New Zealand or have a significant current or past professional or other connection with New Zealand. There is no limit on the number of Honorary Members; however, normally no more than two candidates should be proposed for Honorary Membership at any one Annual General Meeting.

Application deadline and processing

Nominations should be made preferably by 30 September. Honorary membership will only be conferred if nominations of sufficient merit are received.

All nominations must either be by a current member of the Meteorological Society of New Zealand or include a written endorsement by a current member. Nominations should be submitted to the Society awards sub-committee (awards@metsoc.org.nz) and must include:

  • A detailed statement supporting the nomination, including any relevant evidence of exceptional contribution,
  • Two independent letters of support for the nomination, and
  • The nominee’s curriculum vitae.

The Society Committee will evaluate all nominations against the Eligibility and Award Criteria. Any nominee recommended for Honorary Membership will be submitted to the Annual General Meeting for election as an Honorary Member of the Society. Nominees are encouraged to attend and give an invited talk at the annual Meteorological Society Conference.
