Abstract:

An alternate method of displaying and interpreting principal components of surface pressure is presented. Rather than mapping the component loadings, the components are displayed as a series of four composite surface pressure maps representative of the ranked component score. In this form it is argued the physical significance of the principal components may be interpreted in greater detail. An example of the first principal component of South-West Pacific winter pressure is presented.
