An evaluation of the heating degree-day index
Heating degree-days have long been used to estimate energy requirements for the heating of domestic and commercial buildings. They have also been used to assess energy demand during periods of temperature fluctuations from normal. Recent research suggests that much more accurate demand forecasts can be made using disaggregated billing data. Analysis of gas use in both a single household and for a provincial city shows that the 15' C base temperature, which is used by engineers for calculating heating degree-day requirements for New Zealand buildings, is appropriate and should be more widely utilised.
