Abstract:

An account is given of a rare weather event at Pitcairn Island (25º4'S, 130º6'W) – a direct strike by a tropical cyclonic disturbance. It is shown how the large-scale surrounding wind flow prevented this disturbance from becoming a fully-developed warm-core hurricane. A local modification of the pressure field by the island's terrain, which preceded the passage of the cyclone, is also described.
