Abstract:

The area around the Manawatu Gorge has a high frequency of strong winds. The addition of 4 temporary anemometers to a network of another 4 instruments which have operated over a longer period has allowed the wind variations due to terrain to be investigated in some detail. The speed-up due to a ridge lying across the most frequent airflow direction has been obtained from these observations and compared to theoretical calculations. The agreement appears satisfactory.
