Abstract:

From my vantage-point, which includes university, and national and international meteorological institution experience, I have been fortunate in observing (and at times hopefully influencing) changes in the meaning of climatology during the last 30 years. These changes cover a wide spectrum and it will be obvious that other observers of the climatological scene may well see things in a different way. What follows then is a personal view of climatology — past, present, and future. Hopefully it will provide inspiration and insight for those inside and outside climatology who for various reasons still think of climatology as a second-class endeavour.
